I just saw a friend post on FaceBook that christ is the reason for the season. It made me realize that this will be the first year holiday season where I have admitted to myself and others that I am an atheist.
Over the last few years, I have essentially taken all “religious” tokens out of my private thoughts on the holidays. However, I think this year I’d like to revamp the entire way I celebrate the holidays. I do want to continue to enjoy the season, but without the religious connotations. Any ideas?

I love the way we celebrate Christmas in Latin America. Since most people are just nominal Catholics, they don’t even go to church or remember Jesus. They concentrate on partying, hugging friends and relatives, and eating. Lots of eating.
I have no problem celebrating the birth of Jesus that way, using it as an excuse to have pure, unadulterated fun. It could be the birth of Abe Lincoln for all I care.

Currently wondering this myself. It should be an interesting holiday at my house as my husband just told my mother that he is an unbeliever. She has no clue about me but I know the questions will soon follow. I’m not ready for them.

A more naturalistic view of the holiday season would acknowledge the pagan origins of our seasonal traditions. It no longer needs emphasize the Judeo-Christian henotheistic beliefs, but rather can be a celebration of the solstice and the new beginning of the astronomical and calender years. Make your own music and dance to it.
